Batswana are 2.35 million, with one million using the internet.

There are 3.22 million mobile subscriptions, making it 137% of the population, this meaning about 37% of Batswana own two mobile phones.

Active Social Media users in Botswana are one million, with 920,000 of them accessing from their mobile phones.

From January 2018 to January 2019, Botswana’s population grew by 1.8%.

In the same period, mobile subscriptions grew by 1.3%, meaning about 40,000 new subscribers to January 2019.

Internet users grew by 8.3%, with 76,000 new users going online from January 2018 to January 2019 in Botswana.

Active Social Media users grew in Botswana by 11%, with 100,000 plus being added to the networks.

Mobile Social Media users in Botswana grew as well by 11% in a year to January 2019, adding 90,000 plus users.

Though the mobile and population growth rate leaves a lot to be desired in Botswana, the growth rates of Internet Users, Active Social Media users and Mobile Social Media Users are all very impressive, bearing in mind that there is still over half the population not online.

The user of internet and social media in Botswana will grow because of the high urbanisation rate which is at 70%.

Adult literacy in Botswana is at 88% for the whole population, and 89% for female and 87% for male literacy rates.

Considering most social media networks and applications are relational, somewhat feminine, the use of Social media will continue to grow based on the female literacy rates.
